Joran van der Sloot, sentenced to 28 years in a Peruvian prison for the murder of Natalee Holloway, has had sexual relations with three different women despite his incarceration.
This was made possible by allowing so-called “conjugal visits,” a practice legally allowed in Peru that allows prisoners to spend private time with partners from outside the prison.
A spokesman for Peru’s National Penitentiary Institute confirmed that van der Sloot has the same rights as any other prisoner and that his request for visits from three different women was approved.
Van der Sloot, last seen with 18-year-old Natalee Holloway in 2005 and finally admitting to brutally murdering her last year, is known for his ability to attract the attention of women.
His childhood friend Cas Arends described him as someone who has always been a “player” and for whom women have always held an attraction.
After escaping investigation related to Holloway’s death in Aruba, van der Sloot was later convicted in Peru for the murder of his then-girlfriend, economics student Stefany Flores Ramirez, in 2012. Interestingly, Ramirez’s death occurred exactly five years after Holloway’s.
During his incarceration, a total of seven different women have been approved for conjugal visits with van der Sloot, including his ex-wife Leidy Figueroa, with whom he has a child, Dusha Trudie, born in 2014.
Despite his relationship with his long-time girlfriend Eva Pacohuanaco and fathering a child with Figueroa, friends of van der Sloot suggest that he will not live monogamously even behind bars.
Van der Sloot is currently held in the infamous Ancon 1 prison north of Lima. His ability to maintain relationships with women despite the serious crimes for which he was convicted raises questions about the conditions and management of prisons in Peru, particularly regarding the granting of conjugal visits for convicted criminals.
